Bungie’s Rob Engeln, in a video with IGN, says Destiny 2’s Adventures are similar in scope to some of the quest missions that players of Destiny 1 may be familiar with. Although Engeln didn’t specify, it’s likely that he is referring to one-off missions that see players completing a task for a unique reward. Some examples include the missions to acquire the Year 3 Gjallarhorn or the moon mission that saw players fending off hordes with a sword.
While these Adventures may or may not contain any of the numerous cutscenes promised in the game, they are story missions that are “fully voiced” and tell more about the world around the player:
Previously, Bungie said Adventures are about 10-15 minutes long, and Engeln also says that they are “reasonably quick”. What’s also really cool is that Adventures don’t have any load screens or require going to orbit. So players (or fireteams of players) can find these Adventures in the open world, start them, play through, and then when it ends just continue on exploring the destination without ever having to hit a load screen. It’s that seamless transition between experiences which Bungie is trying to highlight as a major change for Destiny 2, and thus far it sounds like the studio is delivering.
Bungie has said that it is infusing Destiny 2 with story from top to bottom, both in epic ways and small ways. So it sounds like Adventures may be one of those smaller ways, where players can get a slice of story a little bit at a time while exploring the more open world areas of the game.
Destiny 2 will launch September 6 on PS4 and Xbox One, with a later October 24 release on PC.
