Averting a growing controversy, Bungie went out of its way to confirm that the PS4 was included in Bungie’s plans to implement cross-saves between supported platforms. The confirmation between Sony and Bungie was, quite literally, made at the last minute. Kotaku reports that Bungie met with Sony in a last-minute push to get the PS4 manufacturer onboard yesterday, June 5, and it worked. Sony agreed to support cross-saves on PS4. It was such a last-second decision that during Google Stadia’s livestream, an hour before Bungie’s, there was fine text shown on-screen saying that PS4 cross-saves were as-yet unconfirmed pending Sony approval.
Bungie did have a note of warning to share as it confirmed that cross-saves would be coming to all Destiny 2 platforms. Smith added that while cross-saves are coming to PS4, the Destiny 2 team is working hard to get it implemented in time for the Shadowkeep expansion. As in, it may not be ready at that point.
Additionally, cross-saves are confirmed to not carry owned expansions that a player owns. If a player owns Forsaken on Xbox One and transfers their save to Steam, they won’t gain access to Forsaken on Steam. They’ll have to purchase the expansion for each independent platform they want to play on. That, unfortunately, includes PC storefronts. Apparently, both Google Stadia and Steam will be treated as different platforms and players will have to purchase expansions for each independently.
The future of Destiny 2 remains to be shown by Bungie. The announcement of Shadowkeep is certain to keep players attention, but it’s the reveal of cross-saves that shows just what’s possible from a newly independent Bungie. These kinds of major feature additions that bring players together in new ways are exactly what players want. And while cross-saves aren’t as ideal as cross-play, it does lend hope for such big changes in the future.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The Shadowkeep expansion launches on September 17.
