Mars, Mercury, Io, Titan, and the Leviathan were the first destinations Bungie vaulted ahead of Beyond Light’s release, along with Destiny 2’s launch campaign, strikes, and raids. Narratively, Bungie set this up in Season of Arrivals with the arrival of the Black Fleet across the system and several pyramid ships entering the four aformentioned planets’ orbits. Their removal was finalized with the season’s closing live event which saw the darkness seemingly consume the four planets, the Leviathan fleeing, and the Traveler healing itself to drive back the darkness.

The next location to be vaulted will be the Tangled Shore, first introduced in Destiny 2’s 2018 expansion Forsaken. Alongside the location, Bungie is also vaulting the expansion’s campaign which saw Cayde-6 killed at the hands of Uldren Sov and set in motion events in Destiny 2 still being felt nearly three years later. Bungie confirmed the vaulting in a post on its official website, along with the vaulting of Year 4’s seasonal content like the Battlegrounds activites and exotic missions Presage and Harbinger.
Bungie said removing this content will make room for the new Throne World destination coming in The Witch Queen and its accompanying content like the legendary campaign difficulty, weapon crafting, and subsequent seasonal content. However, the Dreaming City will remain available for players to visit along with its endgame activities including the Last Wish raid and Shattered Throne dungeon. New players will be able to access this content by purchasing the Forsaken pack when it becomes available on December 7, 2021.
While some players will likely be disappointed to hear another location is being vaulted, it is not suprising given the size of Destiny 2. Bungie executives Mark Noseworthy and Luke Smith, who oversee the Destiny franchise, previously said vaulting would allow the dev team to manage the game’s size more efficiently and provide balance patches and updates at a faster pace. The pair did asuage fan’s concerns, saying content would be brought out of the vault periodically with a fresh coat of paint to bring it in line with the current state of the game.
Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
