Some Exotic weapons are blatantly better than others, of course, but another challenge when choosing which one to use comes from the type of ammunition the gun uses. Destiny 2 has three different types of ammo: Primary, Special, and Heavy, and each has its pros and cons. Primary weapons recently got a big boost in utility thanks to having infinite ammo, so the next best factor to consider for choosing which to use is the gun’s element.

Destiny 2 currently features four different elements, one of which is Stasis and is only available on some Kinetic weapons, whereas the remaining three are Arc, Void, and Solar. A Reddit user by the name of Saint_Victorious shared an interesting post that breaks down the current Exotic Primary weapons into elemental categories. Right now, there are 3 Arc Exotic Primary weapons, 3 Void ones, and a total of 8 Solar ones, making the first two elements quite under-represented.

Solar weapons in Destiny 2 have been very popular for a long while now because of Warmind Cell builds, which are now rather outdated due to nerfs. This leaves players with a much less diverse selection of Arc and Void Primary weapons if they don’t want to use Solar ones, which would make sense if they are running setups that involve Elemental Well mods like Font of Might and a specific elemental subclass. Some of these weapons also have catalysts that are hard to obtain, too, or even don’t have one, to begin with.

Another Exotic Primary is coming with The Witch Queen expansion, and it’s going to be an SMG, but it’s unknown at this point if it will be a Kinetic or an Energy weapon, in which case it would need to be either Arc or Void to improve the current situation. Still, Destiny 2 players want The Witch Queen Raid to have a quest-based Exotic instead of a random drop, and this could be the chance to do right by both categories.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
