In the future, players can expect more reference art for a variety of Destiny 2 content. Zavala and Cayde-6 reference art are almost certain to be in high demand, considering their prevalence in Destiny 2’s marketing so far. References for the new Veist weapons manufacturer should be expected. Grenade launchers are a must. The Destiny community will pretty much cheer for any reference art that Bungie is willing to share.
Bungie also had an art reference page for the original Destiny. It featured art for each class with three references each for Titan, Hunter, and Warlock. It featured character art for both the Awoken Queen and her brother, as well as Petra Venj, oddly enough. Even Ghost has a reference sheet. But the highlight is definitely the weapon references, including sheets for Thorn, Gjallahorn, and even the Titan Sunbreaker’s Thermal Hammer.
The Destiny artist’s reference portal was not without its criticisms, however. As amazing as all that Bungie has made available is, there are large gaps in the content. For example, while there’s male art featured for all three classes, there is no reference for a female Hunter. Luckily, the Destiny 2 Hunter reference makes up for that misstep. And while the named Awoken are well represented, there’s no reference for any of the other heroes of Destiny. There’s no Saladin, no Eris Morn, no Speaker, Xur, or Shax. Let’s hope Destiny 2’s portal gets more love than the first.
Of course, Bungie owes the the community nothing. It’s incredible of them to offer any Destiny 2 reference art for free to the community, especially since the game’s not even out yet. They could just as easily put it in an art book and sell it. But just like with Destiny itself, once one has a taste, it’s difficult to not want more. Look for more updates to the Destiny 2 artist’s reference portal in the months to come.
Destiny 2 launches on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One September 6, with a PC launch to follow on October 24.
